Then and Now

March 28th, 2012

I really enjoyed getting to write the music for “Then and Now”, a Jostie Flicks short. This comedic video (created by Joel Jost) compares our current culture to the olden days.

We used several different musical styles to communicate each scene, ranging from epic cowboy music to hip-hop beats. Because of this, one of the unique challenges for this score was getting everything to flow together smoothly. All told, working with Jostie Flicks was a great experience. Their energy and enthusiasm is contagious; I’d love to work with them again!

Slow Fade

March 20th, 2012

I recently had the wonderful opportunity to score Ryan Anstett‘s feature film, Slow Fade. Slow Fade is a redemptive Christian drama with a strong message to the young people of our culture.

In addition to writing both traditional and hybrid orchestral music for the film, I had the chance to expand my horizon and write in some more contemporary styles, including pop and Latin American.

Captured

“Captured” is a short action thriller created by Desert Vine Studios. The challenge to writing the music for “Captured” was to keep our action-packed score from taking itself too seriously. When composing for heavy action, I find it is all too easy easy to overdo things and end up with a bloated soundtrack that tries to steal the show. A good score must do much more than match the actions you see on the screen–it must embody the scope and scale of the story it is helping to tell.

Pain of Death

Pain of Death MovieI recently got to team up with Jeffrey French to write the music for his short film “Pain of Death”. Set in a world where being a Christian is a capital offense, this story had a lot of dark undertones that we tried to capture with a score reminiscent of “Schindler’s List”. The film has been submitted to the 2012 San Antonio International Christian Film Festival (SAICFF).

Music samples will be released following the first public screening of “Pain of Death”.

A House for Marge

Anna and Marge

This was a very unique project in that it all began with the music. Writer Aubrey Hansen wrote her short screenplay “A House for Marge” based on my musical piece “Further up, Further in”. Jordan Smith of Phantom Moose Films produced the short and the process came full circle when we took the final film and created a new score, inspired by the original work.
